A comic (?) about my love of weird little bats for this halloween
We are all aware that libraries across the United States are under attack. Thanks to groups like Moms for Liberty and other outspoken “concerned citizens,” there has been actual legislative action at multiple levels of government to limit what libraries can do and provide to their communities. Even in the places where there hasn’t been that kind of action, those same concerned citizens have mounted acts of intimidation to instill fear and block access...In light of this, I’ve heard many iterations of the same question: how can we help? What do libraries and library staff need right now?

Library in the Wake of
Rising Fascism
Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
Good discussion, and the steps are good advice for listening
- Stay aware
- Speak up
- Show up
- Be a good bystander

Hi, librarian here.
I don't often talk about my real life on tumblr, because I like keeping a nice distance, but while everything here is good, I want to emphasize a particular bullet point in this article.
Show up.
I feel like it's easy to write this one off a little bit, but I'd say it's actually the most important one. Coming straight from a librarian, if you can't do anything else, show up.
Come to the library. Make a card if you don't have one. Use your card if you do. And if you can possibly make yourself, look at your local public library's events calendar (I guarantee you they have one and it's more robust than you're expecting), pick some programs that look interesting, and for the love of god show up.
Public libraries live or die by being able to demonstrate that we are important to the community, that we are doing things that resonate with the community, especially in this climate that is trying so very hard to kill us. Come to our events. Participate. Talk to other people who came. Bring your family or friends. We need the numbers. We have to give our board and our local government those numbers, and it sucks when they're low (and they often are). I get that you're busy. I get that you're stressed. But if you can, just one or two days a month, find something that looks okay, sign up (or drop in, depending on the program!), and then come visit.
Show up.
I’m a little late to the party, but apparently yesterday was Kulindadromeus Day, the birthday of the discovery of the dinosaur that offered conclusive proof of dinosaur feathers! This is for @a-dinosaur-a-day who have gone Kulin Krazy lately, and with good reason. Happy Belated Kulindadromeus Day!
it’s insane to me that people get so mad at animals for doing animal stuff. people will post 4 paragraph Facebook rants about a killdeer nesting in their gravel and include pics of the bird taking care of their nest with 0 idea that they’re like, occupying an Important Driveway. they’re just being little dudes and you’re seething
